The news from NAEM

And now the news

The Silver Tsunami vs. the Green Wave - Article
The "silver tsunami," as it has been cleverly named, is the projected mass exodus of knowledge, leadership, and experience that will leave the workforce as millions of Baby Boomers retire. As these leaders transition out of their formal careers, will the US lose momentum behind the "green wave" that has grown throughout government, industry, research, and innovation?

Global Initiative Aims for Standardized Sustainability Ratings - Article
The recent proliferation of sustainability ratings providers has spawned inconsistent and often opaque approaches to gauging social equity and environmental stewardship of companies. As a result, Ceres and Tellus Institute have launched an initiative to create and bring to widespread adoption a single standard for rating the sustainability performance of companies. Such a system, they say, will unleash the full power of ratings to drive sustainability deep into capital, procurement and consumer markets.

FDA Issues Draft Guidance on When Use of Nanomaterials Might Prompt Regulation - Article
Draft guidance to inform industries developing nanoengineered products about the approach the Food and Drug Administration will take in regulating those goods was published June 14 in the Federal Register (76 Fed. Reg. 34,715). FDA is seeking comment on the guidance, which "is intended to help industry and others identify when they should consider potential implications for regulatory status, effectiveness, or public heath impact that may arise with the application of nanotechnology in FDA-registered products."

Jail Time for Clean Air Act Violator - Article
The Clean Air Act is an environmental law but it is a law nonetheless. An Iowa resident was sentenced by a US District Judge to 41 months of prison, followed by two years of supervised release, 300 hours of community service, a $12,500 fine, and an addition $200 fine for each victim of his crime. The charge against him was conspiracy to violate Clean Air Act asbestos work practice standards during the renovation over 10-story building in Des Moines.

Make your slide presentation ‘Wow!’ your peers. 4 Persuasive Presentation Preparation Tips - Article
Find out how vaccinate yourself against PPD (Pathetic Presentation Disorder). In a world filled with competing media platforms and over-stimulated professionals, it's time for everyone to take elegant, simple presentation design seriously.

The 1847 lecture that predicted human-induced climate change - Article
More than 160 years on after George Perkins Marsh delivered this speech, it still remarkably prescient today. It shows that he was decades ahead of most other thinkers on this subject, as it was delivered a decade or more before John Tyndall began to explore the thesis that slight changes in the atmosphere's composition could cause climatic variations.
