NTSB urges cell phone ban for all commercial drivers - Article
In the wake of a truck crash, top federal safety investigators vastly broadened their recommendations on cell phones on Tuesday and said all commercial drivers should be forbidden to use them, whether hand-held or not, except in emergencies. The Transportation Department already proposed a ban last December, and is considering public comments on its draft rule. Additionally, the transportation secretary favors a federal law that would ban cell phone use by all drivers.

Be ready: preparing your business for a disaster - Article
As part of National Preparedness Month this September, the American Red Cross offers some tips to help ensure businesses are ready to respond to an emergency event or disaster. An American Red Cross survey found that nearly 60 percent of Americans are not prepared for a disaster of any kind. And according to FEMA, 40 percent of businesses struck by a disaster never reopen.

Don't confuse a scorecard with a scoreboard - Blog
You either achieve your goals or you don't. Energy, creativity, and activity are all good things - but they don't create value unless results are achieved. Most organizations take the same stance. They put a great deal of emphasis on reporting and celebrating results - with the assumption that there is a huge upside to being perceived as a winning company. After all, positive results attract investors, raise stock prices, reinforce customers, draw talent, and more. But only athletic events produce clear winners and losers in the short-term.

Big changes on Dow Jones Sustainability Index - Article
Following a corporate sustainability assessment by sustainable investing boutique SAM, 41 companies will be added to, and 23 firms will deleted from, the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Uncle Sam is checking for green before awarding contracts - Article
Businesses bidding on federal contracts should begin evaluating and making plans to reduce their greenhouse gas footprint as federal agencies move to implement an executive order on sustainability, experts advised. Executive Order 13514, issued in 2009, requires agencies to meet a series of targets for cutting energy and water use and reducing waste and pollution. It also requires 95 percent of new contracts to qualify as energy-efficient, water-efficient, or otherwise be environmentally beneficial. See the press release on Executive Order 13514.

Is green NASCAR an oxymoron? - Article
After all, the sport is all about watching gas guzzlers drive at high speeds in circles for hours. Until 2007, race cars used leaded fuel. But more than any other American sport, NASCAR is also a for-profit business, and like many companies these days, it is focused on cutting costs by recycling, conserving and generating its own energy. While the core of the sport remains unchanged, NASCAR, its teams, track operators and sponsors are employing an ambitious set of green initiatives that includes collecting used fuel, planting trees to offset carbon emissions, and deploying sheep to keep the infield grass short.
