Special Keynote Presentation: Resiliency, Sustainability, and Adaptation - Keeping your Assets Above Water

Climate change has now altered the traditional frame of EHS issues. At the NAEM 2013 Forum oceanographer John Englander opened up the subject of rising sea level. Now he advises corporations, military leaders, and various professions how to plan for the coming decades to keep their assets above water - with coastal and inland flood scenarios. He recommends that ADAPTATION must be part of a suite of solutions along with SUSTAINABILITY and RESILIENCY. In this new era, leaders must understand how the three are related, yet different. Trillions of dollars of assets will go underwater this century; the opportunity to create new asset values will be even greater. Englander explains the science through memorable stories, using images from his expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic.

For over thirty years, he has been a leader in the private and non-profit sectors, serving as CEO for The International SeaKeepers and The Cousteau Society. Englander's acclaimed book, High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis, clearly explains the science, the impending devastating economic effects and the opportunity to design for a more resilient future. Politico listed it as one of the top 50 books to read. John is a sought after public speaker and media expert with appearances on MSNBC, Fox Business, ABC, CBS, PBS, The Weather Channel, CCTV, CBC, NPR and SkyNews TV. John is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Marine Sciences – University of California at Santa Cruz; a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, a Fellow of the Explorers Club, and a member of several professional societies.

Allen M. Stegman is General Director Environmental for BNSF Railway and has over 28 years of experience in the Environmental, Health and Safety field.  At BNSF, one of the largest transportation providers in the United States as well as one of the largest landowners, his core responsibilities include remediation and environmental liability management, emergency response, data/document management, technology/ innovation, acquisitions and divestitures, metrics, finance/budgeting for capital and operational expenses, and project controls.

Mark Hause is the Global EHS Systems and Risk Manager for DuPont as part of the Corporate, Environmental, Health, and Safety Center of Excellence. Previous experiences include Global Environmental Engineering Technology Manager as well as a variety of Leadership roles in Manufacturing, Technology, Sales, Marketing, Business Development, and Business Management in the 38 years that he has been at DuPont.

During one of the tightest labor markets in decades, demand for talent has skyrocketed and EHS leaders are feeling pressure to deliver greater results with fewer resources. Shirley Parsons recently surveyed 533 EHS executives from across the United States, asking them to assess their organizations' EHS cultures and provide information surrounding the structure and turnover within their teams. In this short presentation, Sam will run through some insights from their inaugural EHS Talent Report and provide attendees with takeaways they can use to benchmark their own organizations.
